Snyk Code gave us a net new capability to add to our arsenal. It analyzes code we write, quickly, and provides legitimate, actionable information that engineers can use during development and within build workflows. The Snyk view lets engineers quickly see any code issues, other sources for that issue, as well as how other engineers in the industry have fixed the issue. It gives us meaningful static analysis results that we can take action on immediately.
Before Snyk, our approach to open source security was slow and time-consuming. We did manual checks of our packages before releases for some products (lots of googling and bookmarks), for others we use a collection of smaller tools. There are only a few security engineers at the company, but hundreds of developers; we will never scale with them, so we must proactively enable them.
I was really happy to have containers scanning before runtime production. People weren’t paying attention to the vulnerabilities in containers, so it has been eye opening for the organization. It truly increases awareness of those vulnerabilities and enables more automation. It’s more in line with that quality improvement mindset that the engineering teams have in their CI/CD practices.
